Rain Gutters—Overlooked and Absolutely Necessary
Rain gutters are a forgotten feature of every home until they fail. Seamless aluminum gutters make us appreciate the function, beauty, and necessity of these home protectors.
Many of us have had the disgusting, shocking experience of walking beneath a rain gutter that has failed to channel water away from the porch, sidewalk, or walkway beneath it—that is, the place where we were standing. The last time it rained, there was no problem. Now it feels as if buckets of cold water are splashing down on our heads and soaking our shoes. In our dismay and anger, who do we blame? Why the gutter, of course.
The problem is, we didn’t bother to thank the gutter for the dozens of previous rainstorms we weathered with no personal saturation at all because the gutter did its job so well. Now, something has happened to prevent our rain gutter from routing water away from us. In our frustration, we may think there is no point at all in having a gutter. Why, if the gutter weren’t there, that gusher of water off of our roof wouldn’t be washing away the azaleas and leaving a big puddle for us not quite to jump across. Without a gutter, wouldn’t the rain just gently flow down the roof and not cause any trouble? Why do we need a gutter anyway?
Do We Really Need Gutters?
If you want your house to be a safe place to live, if you want it to endure the weather and stand the test of time for decades, if you want the yard around your house to stay pretty and level, then absolutely yes, you need to have rain gutters. Gutters fulfill several simple but amazingly important functions to make your house a place worth living.
When rain is allowed to flow unabated down the side of your house, it doesn’t just evaporate. It clings to the underside of the shingles along the edge of the rooftop and warps the framework and decking. It seeps into the edges of the millwork alongside your windows. Eventually, that water is going to allow the growth of mold. To be sure, there are a lot of different kinds of mold. As the story goes, after Hurricane Katrina, scientists in New Orleans discovered several new varieties of mold they had never seen before. The main thing for you to remember about mold is that it is unhealthy for human beings no matter what kind it is and getting rid of it is very expensive. The best course of action is to prevent it, if at all possible.
Along with mold, unchecked rainwater causes lots of other kinds of damage: uneven paint wear, drastic erosion of the earth so that foundations settle and crack, and then there is the basement. A functional gutter can keep your basement from flooding. In addition to all these serious structural problems that arise from not having a good gutter, it’s important to remember that a house without gutters is never going to have a level, beautiful yard. Gutters are intentionally plumbed to move the water to protect the foundation of the house and preserve the yard. When gutters fail, it’s worse than not having one.
Not All Gutters Are Created Equal
Once the rain stopped, chances are you got a ladder and climbed up to take a look at the gutter to find out why it wasn’t working the way it was supposed to and had been. The natural assumption most of us would make is that leaves have clogged the intersection between the main track of the gutter and the downspout. Often this is precisely the problem. Sometimes, however, there are other culprits.
If the wood screws fastening the gutter to the fascia of the house have come loose hardware, a natural funnel develops to splash great volumes of water downward. If nails were used instead of wood screws, they should be replaced with wood screws. Sometimes animals like squirrels or starlings will build nests either in the mouth of the downspout or along the main track, which then washes over and clogs the downspout. One of the most embarrassing and humorous issues that gutters can develop is tree growth—not the limbs of growing trees knocking them loose (although that happens), but trees actually taking root in the gutters and growing up high enough that their root structure stops the flow of water. This also permits the growth of undesired critters (not just mosquitoes but spiders and asp caterpillars).
Another problem can develop, as well. If you have traditional gutters, you can see where they are pieced together and fastened with welds or screws. These can come loose as the gutter weathers a few rainy seasons and a tropical storm or two. Once these seams have deteriorated to the point of separating, it’s very difficult for a layperson to fix them so they will successfully meld together, stay put, and work as they did. There is one kind of gutter; however, that is much less susceptible to any of these problems: the seamless aluminum gutter. We’ll come back to that idea.
How Are Seamless Gutters Made?
Seamless gutters are fabricated from a single piece of material that is formed into a cup-shaped receptacle, often with a partial lip on top of the gutter. This allows water to flow over the edge of the lip into the gutter, but prevents any large obstacle—limbs, squirrels, badminton birds, frisbees, etc., from getting into the gutter. As a result, there are no seams to break apart, no trees growing inside the track of the gutter, no bird’s nests, and much less likelihood of rainwater dumping on your head.
Seamless gutters are not only seamless in their shape but also in their assembly. Typically, they are made of one, undivided piece because everywhere there is a new section added or the integrity of a section is compromised by a screw or a connection, that is a point where water can accumulate and eventually cause a leak. Finally, they are coated with a baked-on enamel finish that is exceptionally resistant to the elements.
How Are Seamless Gutters Installed?
Because a seamless gutter system is specifically designed for your house and is usually fabricated right at your house, the bracketing system used to install it is specifically intended to match up with the wood supports of your home. Care is taken when the guttering is attached to make sure that neither your home nor the gutters be placed where will be compromised areas where water can opportunistically create problems. Often, seamless gutter systems are a guarantee against leaking for several years.
What Is the Best Material to Use When Installing New Gutters?
We specifically mentioned aluminum above and there are some excellent reasons for that. Gutters can be made from different stuff and it’s worth taking a comparative look at several different types of fabrications. Here are the basic types of gutter materials:
This is the least expensive stuff you can use per linear foot. It’s also the least durable and cannot be fabricated into a seamless gutter. Vinyl tends to fade in direct sunlight, which can give a two-toned look to your gutters. Above all, it is relatively easy to chip and crack or dislodge vinyl.
Steel is incredibly durable and pretty pricey. Usually, it’s coated with anti-corrosion emulsion before installation. Within a few years, however, it will begin to rust; this process is accelerated if wet leaves remain in the gutters. Steel is heavy and put a real load on the fascia.
This is quite expensive. It’s long-lasting and gets a weathered patina over time. Zinc must be welded together to be installed.
Very durable, copper is also very expensive and, like zinc, must be professionally installed. As it weathers, it turns green, an effect that is prized by some (since it says you installed the most expensive gutters).
This is probably the ideal gutter fabrication for those who want lasting gutters that are weatherproof, lightweight, and strong. Aluminum comes in different weights, although—unless you’re expecting a lot of snow in Baton Rouge—you can probably get by with a light or medium-weight gutter assembly. Also, aluminum is comparatively inexpensive.
Rain Gutter Functionality
While they do not get the good press of window treatments and wallpaper, rain gutters are much more important to your well-being—and therefore, your family. Gutters can prevent catastrophic home damage caused by rainfall, not to mention keeping downpours of rain from falling on your head.
Eventually, gutters have to be replaced, either from wear or because they were not properly installed. It’s a very important idea to check your home’s gutters when it’s not raining and then watch for water spillage when it is raining.
When the time comes to replace your gutters, your best choice is to go with seamless gutters that will be fabricated at your home and installed in less than a day. Aluminum seamless gutters will last for decades, long after you’ve gone back to ignoring them.
